Winter tyres in Geneva: when should they go on?

According to the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO), tyres suited to winter are essential for driving safely during the season, and they are generally recommended from October to Easter. The TCS, quoted by RTS on 20.11.2025, points out that they help as soon as the temperature drops below 7 °C, not only when it snows.

FEDRO recommends at least 4 mm of tread for a winter tyre; the law requires 1.6 mm. The TCS adds that below 4 mm, a winter tyre loses some of its qualities for winter driving, and advises fitting tyres of identical size, make, tread and wear, at least on each axle.

Are winter tyres compulsory in Switzerland? No: according to FEDRO, there is no legal obligation to fit winter tyres. But anyone who causes an accident or seriously disrupts traffic with summer tyres in winter risks a fine, or even having their driving licence withdrawn, and their insurer may refuse to cover the damage.

Cross-border drivers from the Ain: what changes on 1 November

Do you drive into Geneva from the Ain? From 1 November to 31 March, in the Ain municipalities listed by the prefecture, a car must carry either snow chains (metal or textile) for at least two driving wheels, or be fitted with four winter tyres. Since 1 November 2024, only tyres marked 3PMSF count: the three-peak mountain symbol with a snowflake, together with M+S.

The list notably covers the Pays de Gex: Gex, Divonne-les-Bains, Ferney-Voltaire, Saint-Genis-Pouilly, Thoiry or Prévessin-Moëns, for example, as well as Valserhône. Situation as of 28.10.2026.

Before the change, look at the sidewall of your winter tyres: if they only carry M+S, without the mountain symbol, they are no longer enough in those municipalities. The details are in our article Winter equipment compulsory in the Ain from 1 November.

Our tyre advice

When should brake pads and discs be changed?

As soon as the brake pedal goes down further than usual, or you hear a squeal when braking. These are the two signs not to ignore: brake pads and discs are then replaced.

Tyres, brakes and bodywork in one place

Bodywork, mechanics and broken glass are all handled in-house: one call, one file. A wheel kerbed at the same time as the tyre can be mentioned in the same call: see wheel repair.

How much does a tyre change cost?

The quote is free. The price depends on the car and the tyres to be fitted: you are given it before any work starts, and nothing begins without your consent. Ask for it on 076 429 04 12.

How do you book?

By phone on 076 429 04 12, on WhatsApp at the same number, or through the form on the Contact page, giving the make, the model and what you want done: seasonal change, cut tyre, longer pedal travel, squeal.

The workshop is at Avenue Pictet-de-Rochemont 33ter, 1207 Genève. Open Monday to Friday, 7.30 am – 12 noon and 1 pm – 5.30 pm.

Your questions about tyres and brakes

Are winter tyres compulsory in Geneva?

According to FEDRO, there is no legal obligation to fit winter tyres in Switzerland. Anyone who causes an accident with summer tyres in winter nevertheless risks a fine, or even having their driving licence withdrawn, and their insurer may refuse to cover the damage (FEDRO, published on 05.12.2024, accessed on 07.10.2026).

When should I switch to winter tyres?

FEDRO recommends using them from October to Easter. Call 076 429 04 12 to book a day for the change.

I live in the Ain: are my winter tyres enough?

In the Ain municipalities listed by the prefecture, from 1 November to 31 March, you need either chains in the boot or four winter tyres. Since 1 November 2024, only tyres marked 3PMSF (three-peak mountain and snowflake) count. Situation as of 28.10.2026.

At what point should a winter tyre be replaced?

FEDRO recommends at least 4 mm of tread for a winter tyre, and the law requires 1.6 mm. The TCS adds that below 4 mm, a winter tyre loses some of its qualities in winter.

Why is my brake pedal travel getting longer?

It is one of the two signs that call for a brake check, along with a squeal when slowing down. Pads and discs are then replaced.
